Kraut Rocks DC This September
This September, a band of influential chefs will rock the Washington D.C. food scene with a multi-sensory gastronomical experience called “Kraut Rocks. ” Top Chef alum and Washington D.C. restaurateur Spike Mendelsohn will host the month-long culinary experience that puts sauerkraut, the classic fermented cabbage, on center stage (yes, you read that correctly). Spike wants to change the perception of sauerkraut from just your average hot dog topping to something worth savoring. Can he do it? The people will decide! Spike says, “Washington D.C. has passionate food fans who have a rabid appetite for food knowledge and discovery. That’s what Kraut Rocks is: a virtual and live experience that delivers equal measures of food education and discovery. Ultimately people will discover sauerkraut’s possibilities by experiencing the flavors, aromas and versatile preparation techniques showcased in the signature dishes served at Kraut Rocks chefs’ restaurants.”
Mendelsohn has assembled a group of progressive D.C. area chefs, including fellow Top Chef alum and DC darling, Mike Isabella, to showcase Kraut Rocks selecting the diverse band of five trendsetting chefs because of their culinary knowledge, creativity and innovation. Each chef will create a signature sauerkraut dish to serve at his respective restaurant throughout the month of September and Mendelsohn has challenged each chef to give sauerkraut, stereotypically a traditional condiment, equal billing among their recipe’s other ingredients.
Additionally Mendelsohn invited the group of culinary influentials to a test kitchen to share their expertise, ideas, inspiration, observations, and recipes. He captured the food chat on video, and will serve up these video vignettes to provide foodies with unprecedented behind-the-scenes access.
Food groupies can learn more about admission to Kraut Rocks, which includes dining, voting, winning and tuning in, by visiting KrautRocks.com, which just went live August 22nd. Fans can also follow the experience on Twitter @Kraut_Rocks and liking KrautRocks on Facebook.
Kraut Rocks is presented by the region’s leading sauerkraut brands, KRRRRISP Kraut and Silver Floss Sauerkraut. “Kraut Rocks’ sponsors chose D.C. for its inaugural tour because our food scene is rocking. Here in D.C., chefs are shaking up the culinary world with our restaurant concepts, recipes and trendsetting ideas, and the locals are hungry for all of it because they’ve made food a passionate part of their lifestyle,” Mendelsohn said.
Kraut Rocks Chefs and Restaurants:
Mendelsohn purposefully selected a diverse group of chefs whose cuisine, methodology and neighborhood location were significantly different in order to dramatize today’s limitless approaches to contemporary culinary creations that rock sauerkraut.
