Win Tickets for 4 to Art and Soul’s Patio Crab Boil

One of my favorite restaurants in town, Art and Soul (415 New Jersey Ave., NW), located on Capitol Hill, has turned their gorgeous patio into the District’s newest crab boil destination. Every Wednesday, Chef Wes Morton will serve Louisiana-style jumbo crabs, traditional sides, and cold, seasonal beer from Flying Dog Brewery. Why Louisiana style? Chef de Cuisine, Morton was raised in Abeville, LA where he gained an appreciation and respect for food, like a good ole’ southern boy should.
Every Wednesday, enjoy Beer and Happy Hour specials from 4-7pm, with the Crab Boil starting at 5:30 p.m. Get three crabs for $21, six crabs for $40 or twelve crabs for $72. Assorted sides like corn on the cob, potatoes and sausage are $3 — so get as many as you want! Flying Dog seasonal brews: $4/glass and $16/pitcher.
To celebrate Dining in DC’s 5 year Blogiversary, Art and Soul is generously donating tickets for 4 people to attend one of their Wednesday weekly patio crab boils! Comment below about why you love Crabs for your chance to win! One Winner will be chosen Friday, June 22, 2012 at Noon. Must be a Dining in DC Subscriber to be eligible to win.

There is nothing like a bushel or 2 of fresh hot crabs and the entire family from the eldest to the youngest, gathered once or twice a year traveling 2-3 states to sit down and feast together like a mini family reunion. Just an awesome reason for the family to get together all behind crabs…I love it!

It’s a Maryland tradition! You can taste a bit of the Chesapeake Bay, a bit of Old Bay, and a bit of nature’s best mustard in every sweet bite! You can’t be crabby when you’re eating crabs!

I love crabs because they bring fond memories of my youthful days. Growing up in New England (New Hapshire) we always enjoyed seafood as a family tradition. I grew up spending many days at the beautiful, rocky beaches. Although I don’t get to visit too often, eating crabs brings those memories back to life.

I just got back from an afternoon at Cantler’s hammering away at my crabs, so I couldn’t be more thrilled to hear about Crab Wednesdays and this giveaway. To me, crabs are the perfect summer food–especially when enjoyed with an ice cold beer.

My fondest memories as a child was eating crabs with the family. My mother would have steamed the crabs in beer and sizzling spices. The aroma would fill the air with a scent that would scintillate the senses. As she brought the bushel of crabs to the table. My eyes would light up and heart be overfilled with joy. Any worries or problems would disappear instantly. Happiness and laughter would consume the family as we dived into the delicious crabs. A tasty crab, so simple, yet so powerful to bring family together.

Eating crabs in the DC area really highlights one of the region’s best seafood offerings. Coming from Florida, I was used to fresh seafood, but the crabs in this area are just so good. They can bring back old memories for those who grew up eating them here while giving you the time to make new memories with friends. No matter how many times I go to a crab boil, someone is always new to eating crab, so everyone gets to get in on the act of teaching the proper technique.

I love crabs for so many different reasons. Maryland crabs are amazing. I love popping the shells off and keeping them to the side so I can also grab the old bay off it. Crabs are a summer staple for anyone who has grown up in this area, or been here for more than 3 years. (If you’ve lived here more than 3 years, and aren’t addicted to crabs, you have chosen the wrong set of friends.)
I remember when I was younger I would sit and wait next to my mom as she picked the crabs and made a little pile for me, then I learned, and now that I’m older and some of my friends have kids, we all do the same thing. Pick a pile of meat for the kids and let them eat as they run.
Not only do crabs taste great, but it’s such a social activity. Crabs are great experience. Get a bushel, and some beers. Sit and pick til your full, then talk a whole bunch, then go back to picking. It never get’s old.
I’m such a true crabber than my friends when we get together for Thanksgiving, we do Crabsgiving instead with a bushel of crabs.

Love, Love, Love crabs! Especially Maryland Male Crabs. I could eat them anyway you could make them. Just like Bubba from Forest Gump would say (instead of shrimp) “Crab is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey’s uh, crab-kabobs, crab creole, crab gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There’s pineapple crab, lemon crab, coconut crab, pepper crab, crab soup, crab stew, crab salad, crab and potatoes, crab burger, crab sandwich. That- that’s about it.”

Some of my favorite memories are centered around crab boils. Whether it’s traveling up to Maryland, attending a special event at a DC restaurant, or purchasing a bushel at the SW Fish Market to enjoy at home, crab boils guarantee fun with family and friends!

For me, crabs are all about the process. I like to crack and pick a whole bunch of crabs at once, stockpiling the meat as I go until I have a softball-sized lump of crab meat. At that point I hit it with some extra Old Bay and enjoy it by the handful…unless my wife or daughter has robbed my stash while I’m working!

Crabs to me is family time. I grew up in florida, where my family and I would enjoy crab boils together every summer. I have since grown up and moved to California, my family moved to D.C. I will be visiting them this summer for the month of JULY!! I couldn’t think of anything more amazing then a crab broil. Coming together around crab, corn, and other fixin’s is something deep in our southern roots. I know where this Chef is coming from, nothing better than getting down and dirty with family over some crab. The laughs, good times and conversations over crab can never be forgotten. I would love nothing more then to treat my parents to a good family time crab boil <3

Crab even though it’s sometimes hard to eat is soooo delish. It’s messy, fun, and it reminds me of summer everytime I eat it. Nothing is better than a crab boil with family and friends. The sweet corn and everything it’s so good to have fun with friends eating crabs. The meat is juicy, sweet, and you can’t get enough of it. Besides that it’s the only time that everyone around you can wear a bib and still get mess but have a great time.

I would love the chance to check out Art & Soul and try Louisiana crabs for the first time! Crabs crabs they are so great, keep them filled up on my plate!
I just heard a funny story from a co-worker yesterday that years ago when his family was having a crab boil some of the crabs got loose and they all managed to corner their Labrador and pinch him in the nose! Fortunately, that was all the harm done and the crabs were all rounded up. Just one reason why I haven’t yet boiled my own crabs at home!
Thanks Lisa!

As someone from Massachusetts, I didn’t get to indulge in the joy that is crabs until I came down to MD for school. I think the best thing about crabs is that it’s a fun social meal that everyone enjoys. There is no better way to end a nice day on a boat or the beach than getting a bunch of crabs, sitting around a table, drinking beer and getting your hands dirty!
